No 'National Game' Status to Hockey, says Sports Ministry

The Hockey players and fans will be disappointed to know that the game, which had fetched six consecutive Olympic gold medals to our country, is not considered as the 'national game'.  It was clear in an RTI reply by the Sports Ministry that the government has not declared any sports as national game. Surprisingly, an article on field hockey is be found under the section National Game on the government web portal www.india.gov.in.

In an reply to the 10-year-old Aishwarya Parashar, who had filed an RTI application to the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) seeking certified copies of orders related to declaration of National anthem, song, sport, animal, bird, flower and symbol, Sports Ministry Under Secretary Shiv Pratap Singh Tomar wrote that the ministry has not declared any sport or game to be the National Game.

Aishwarya's queries were transferred from the PMO to the Home Ministry, which later forwarded to the National Sport to the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports.

However, the government portal under the section 'National Symbol' has given details of 14 symbols which include - flag, bird, flower, tree, Anthem, River, Aquatic Animal, State Emblem, Calendar, Animal, Song, Fruit, Game, Currency Symbol.
